Unlike ground treatment, ground improvement is the process of modifying the ground in-situ without the introduction of chemicals or hardening materials. It is routinely considered on most projects where poor or unstable soils are encountered, especially on sites underlain by suspect or uncontrolled fills, as well as sites with soft or loose soils. For these sites, former conventional practice was to either remove and replace the unsuitable soils, or bypass them with deep foundations. Today, in-situ improvement is a viable alternative, and in most instances proves to be the most economical means to mitigate an undesirable situation.
Nicholson has been performing ground improvement work since the early 1990s. Over the years this work was performed through relationships with European companies who manufactured specialized equipment for ground improvement. Today, as the North American business unit of the Soletanche Bachy group, we own a full line of specialized equipment stationed throughout the U.S. to meet the needs of our customers on a geographical basis.
Using technical support equipment manufactured by The Vibroflotation Group, a technical subsidiary of Soletanche Bachy specializing in ground improvement processes, Nicholson performs work throughout the U.S. offering services such as:
